Help Save Johnny Echo’s horses

Johnny Echo needs your help.  Johnny is a Gija traditional owner of a vast area in the Kimberley where he has helped to breed excellent Arabian x Quarter Horses. Now station owners are planning to aerial cull these beautiful horses, claiming wrongly that they are affecting cattle feed . These horses are protecting the biodiversity of the area and each horse that Johnny trains is worth $2,000 +. Feral desert donkeys are digging wells, giving water to parched wildlife

Research by Lundgren, Wallach and Ramp suggests that wild equids are filling the void of extinct megafauna and are contributing to biodiversity. In particular, they have been found to find water in desert areas which are used by many species. There is also evidence that wild horses are doing this in Australia. “…research didn’t evaluate the impact of donkey-dug wells in arid Australia. Stop Press ! Urgent Petition to Oppose Live Export of Horses and Donkeys

You may have heard that there are moves in the federal government to open up a market in the live export of ponies, horses and donkeys for slaughter overseas. Under questioning in Senate Estimates from Senator Derryn Hinch, Departmental officials confirmed that a number of enquiries had been made about exporting horses and donkeys “in large numbers for slaughter”. Various groups, including Canberra’s rspca and the Australian Equine Unification Scheme groups have worked to raise awareness about this – but until Senate Estimates there was nothing recorded in the public domain to share.
