Dear Jill, Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding the management of eastern Victoria’s alpine brumbies. Etched in Australian folklore, with the likes of Banjo Patterson’s ‘The Man From Snowy River’, brumbies have become part of our heritage and high country identity.  Accordingly, their numbers need to be managed sustainably. The Government must have appropriate, ethical management measures in place to protect our natural environment.  Mustering and rehoming must be the priority in any government program to manage their numbers rather than shooting and eradication. It’s late at  night, and in the cool dark, a herd of horses – pregnant mares, yearlings from last year’s foals, old horses, young horses, and the herd’s stallions with the bachelor herds nearby, are quietly grazing.  Suddenly, a shot rings out, and a mare goes down, the herd panics at the sound    and begins to run –  not knowing they are surrounded by ground shooters using thermal imaging and noise suppressors to pinpoint where their targets are. A Parks Victoria program to shoot eastern Victoria’s alpine brumbies is being opposed by Gippsland East Nationals MP, Tim Bull, who believes there are better ways to manage numbers. A court challenge opposing the shooting of the horses was lost last week and the program is expected to commence later this month. “Everyone understands brumby numbers require monitoring and at times control measures will need to be implemented, but this can be done – as it has successfully in the past – through capture and rehoming,” said Mr Bull. “Brumbies have become part of our heritage and High-Country identity.
