ABA Press Release – 6-Sept-2016 Alpine Brumbies used as Scapegoats ABC Gippsland (Victorian Government Mulls Brumby Cull, 5-Sept-2016) reported claims made by the Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio that thousands of brumbies are causing damage in the Victorian Alps. The latest count of 2,350 Brumbies in the Victorian Alps is tiny compared to feral pigs, deer and rabbit numbers. Furthermore, Brumbies do not foal every year, but pigs, deer and rabbits have annual multiple births. Multiple birth species can recover rapidly from a cull. ABA frustrated by delay in Parks Victoria report release

Why are we still waiting for the release of results of a wild horse count survey that was conducted over a year ago in Victoria’s Alpine National Park? A draft summary of the March 2014 count in NSW’s Kosciuszko National Park was released September 2014 (full report is 63 pages excluding raw data). However the Victorian Alps population count (completed 12 months ago) is yet to be released. ABA has written to Bill Jackson CEO of Parks Victoria. ABA Response to Draft Management Plan – Greater Alpine National Park (Vic)

The ABA has responded to the Victorian “Greater Alpine National Parks draft management plan” released June 2014. In summary, the ABA has called for: “The Brumby’s unique, living cultural must be recognised as it is totally consistent with the Act obligations to respect culture), by: Formalising conservation grazing programs, Maintaining viable, co-existing Brumby populations, and Removing overabundant Brumby numbers by humane methods such as passive trapping, low stress mustering and fertility control [effective now for populations < 200].
