The senseless killing of 11 Brumbies in KNP over the weekend

ABA Media Release 9 Sep 2022

The Australian Brumby Alliance (ABA) received reports over the weekend that on the
11th of September 11 Brumbies had been shot and killed in Kosciusko National Park,
NSW. It appears these Brumbies were shot by professionals as each body had only one
or at most two gun-shot wounds and most of the 11 Brumbies were shot in the head
with an instant kill.

Brumbies are flight animals, also considered prey animals and therefore extremely
sensitive to their environment and do not allow people intent on harming them or the
herd, in close proximity. Furthermore, given all 11 members of this family group were
shot and killed at the same time, indicates that multiple shooters were involved with
high powered riffles able to shoot and kill a family group of Brumbies from a distance.
This was an organised professional killing.
The ABA asks NSW Parks and Wildlife for their response to presence of multiple
professional shooters in the Kosciusko National Park with high powered rifles able to
shoot an animal which weighs approx 600kgs.

NSW has legislation Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Act 2018 which regulates the
management of Brumbies on public land. The purpose of the Act is to recognise the
heritage value of sustainable wild horse populations within parts of Kosciuszko
National Park and to protect that heritage.
The ABA asks NSW Parks and Wildlife for their response how the professional killing
of 11 Brumbies in KNP is consistent with the Kosciusko Wild Horse Heritage Act?

The bodies of the 11 Brumbies which were professionally shot have been left to rot in
the Kosciusko National Park.
The ABA asks NSW Parks and Wildlife for their response on the environmental
impact of these 11 bodies to the ecosystem in KNP.

The ABA is deeply saddened at the senseless killing of these Brumbies.
